Ünnepelünk

This has been a long, holiday weekend in Hungary: celebrating one of our three national holidays on Thursday, March 15 (anniversary of the 1848 revolution) 

Hosszú, ünnepi hétvége van otthon: március tizenötödike volt csütörtökön.

The Big World did not celebrate us, nor with us, there were no words of appreciation or greetings on the new sites, the mainstream media kept silent about the big day of a small nation.

A nagyvilág nem ünnepelt sem minket, sem velünk, nem írtak rólunk méltató, köszöntő cikkeket a híroldalak; a mainstream média mélységesen hallgatott egy kis ország nagy napjáról.

It did not create a big fuzz either that Hungarian Gripen Jet aircrafts are drilling these days in Sweden, and not even as part of Lion Effort 2012, that will comes a bit later.

Az se vert fel túlságosan nagy port, hogy magyar Gripen vadászgépek gyakorlatoznak Svédországban, és még csak nem is a Lion Effort 2012 részeként, az majd egy picit később lesz.

Yet we are important, otherwise the speech of Hungary’s PM Viktor Orban wouldn’t have made such a huge astonishment all over the news and splash headlines: he said that “We will not be a colony” to the European Union.Wall Street Journal, a New York Times, a Financial Times, Business Week, Washington Post, Reuters, BBC and others were all loud with this. Maybe there were only two of them who mentioned it at all, in passing, that Hungary was celebrating a national holiday.   

Viszont mégiscsak fontosak vagyunk, különben nem keltett volna hatalmas megrökönyödést és szenzációt a fő hírforrások címlapjain Orbán Viktor magyar miniszterelnök beszéde, mely szerint az ország nem lesz az Európai Unió gyarmata. Ettől harsogott a Wall Street Journal, a New York Times, a Financial Times, Business Week, Washington Post, Reuters, BBC és mások. Közülük talán csak kettő említette meg futólag Magyarország nemzeti ünnepét.

Even these festive days, there are people who think the Prime Minister is right, there are those who think he is not; there are supporters of the government and there are their opponents.

Március idusán is vannak magyarok, akik igazat adnak az éppen hatalmon levő miniszterelnöknek, vannak, akik nem; vannak kormánypártiak, és vannak ellenzékiek.

I haven’t been digging too deeply into the Hungarian history, for no matter how a small nation we are, we went through quite adventurous centuries and millennia, and not a half life would be enough for one to study it all. Any anyway, who knows what is true and what isn’t in the prevailing history books – but as far as I can remember, whenever our nation has been probed, under pressures, hard times, it was always keeping together, solidarity that has helped us.

Igazán mélyen nem ástam bele magam a magyar történelembe, hiszen kis nép létünkre igencsak kalandos évszázadokon, évezredeken mentünk keresztül, aminek alapos tanulmányozására talán egy fél élet sem volna elegendő. Egyébként is: ki tudja, hogy az éppen aktuális történelemkönyvekben mi igaz, és mi nem – de amennyire jól emlékszem, amikor nemzetünk megpróbáltatások előtt, nyomás alatt állt, nehéz időket élt meg, mindig az összetartás segített.

Why would this be otherwise now?

Miért lenne ez most másképp?

For festive weekends and for ordinary days, let me recommend a documentary which was shown a few days ago, by a young man Janos (John) Hasulyo, from my hometown Kazincbarcika. (Only in Hungarian, and it’s about what does it mean to be Hungarian in the United States today, interviewing 20 persons.)
